I have to gripe just a bit!! Last year my (then third grader) son constantly forgot his homework. Many times he would be out the door on his way to school and I would walk into the living room to find his homework. Early on, wanting to save him from the consequences of missing his homework assignments, I would drive the three blocks to the school to drop it off for him. After a while I realized that I was prolonging the learning aspect of always being sure you had your homework with you by constantly ’saving’ him. So I stopped driving it up to him, and let him suffer the consequences of missing his assignments. It did stop to some degree near the end of the school year.
Today–18 hours after we lost power-it came back on. But only after the boys were in the truck heading to school. I don’t know how many of you have tried–but doing homework by candlelight is extremely irritating! Plus with no lights, air condition–sleep it’s hard to get everything together and out the door before the sun comes up. So as I walked back into the living room after waving them off–I see Jake’s homework folder. His second day of school–in a new school–and he’s forgotten his homework. I will be driving it to him just before school is out–so that he can turn it in. If I was to follow him and get it there quickly, it is no longer the 3 blocks to school–it’s 45 miles-and I’m not doing that for two pieces of paper!!
