All these answers are great!
I live in Japan and a bento is a term they use now for any to-go style lunch. Like mentioned they do usually contain rice and fish. Quick marts similar to 7-11's in the states sell items that range from fish and rice wrapped in a seaweed triangle to plastic containers with a full meal. Still referred to as a bento.
The bento box is a several ( I've seen them with 3-4)seperate, stackable containers that usual lock together with the handle. Then wrapped and tied with a piece of decrotive cloth on the outside.
Now a days they can be made with plastic and are inexpensive to buy but, there are some very elaborate ones made in black or red lacquer that are very expensive.

I would check an asian market place or maybe Pier 1.

Of course you could get one sent from Japan too!

My wife went back a couple of months ago, and she said they cost at least 800 yen. Real good ones like Makunouchi bento will cost over 1000 yen.

Note that the cost of bentos will vary depending on what part of the country you are in. They will be most expensive in well-traveled Tokyo and Osaka train lines and will be cheaper in places like Akita, Aomori, southern Shikoku, Kyushu, etc.

The bento's have compartments that separates the rice from the others, usually zukemono. So they don't slush around. If you want miso soup, or wakame soup, use thermos.

Simple bentos have 1 level metal, plastic or wooden boxes.

Elaborate ones are 2 or even 3 stacks and can carry many different side dishes. They're made in a way that they stack on one another.

Use handkerchief to wrap them or in a nice bag.

essentially it's a japanese boxed lunch (like our modern lunch boxes). ussually contains a rice, meat or fish, vegetables, and dessert. nowadays there is a pre-made box but in old times they wove boxes out of bamboo. the box is divided up into two larger compartments and 3 smaller.

as for where to buy them: check your local asian grocery store. i heard you can also ship bento but i don't know how much i would trust that...

1 U.S. cup or 5oz / 140g spelt pasta, 170 cal
A few pieces of white flour pasta, 40 cal
1/4 cup or 1.75 oz / 50g frozen tuna salad with mayonnaise, 120 cal
About 3/4 cup sweet pepper and onion confit with zucchini, 90 cal
1/2 Tbs. olive oil, 55 cal
3-4 black olives, 30 cal
1 boiled egg, 80 cal
Lemon juice, cherry tomatoes, celery, parsley, 10 cal
Total calories (approx): 645 (how calories are calculated)

Type: Pasta salad!

This is such a simple thing to do, and there’s no better time to do it than in the summer when so many fruits are in season. Cut up any soft ripe fruit, and put them into silicon cupcake liners or wrap in plastic film. Then stash each cup or bundle in a freezer safe plastic container. You can then take out a cup or two and tuck them into your bento box. They act as an edible cooler for your bento. The container here has a cut up nectarine (divided into two silicon liners) and 2 small bananas (divided into 4).

Okay...here's what they're about:

As far as buying them, I would try your local asian grocer or shop. On-line will probably give you the best selection though. Here are some sites:

I hope this all helps! Good luck!

Bento box is basically lunch box. Usually, leftovers are put in it, along with pickled items. Just put a lot of different things you like to eat in it, kind of like Lunchables. The more different food you put, the more fun it should be. In Hawaii, we put rice, barbeque meat, pickled vegtable - that's a simple one. You could just name it like a P&J bento, that will be okay - put peanutbutter jelly sandwich, chips, fruits, sardines (if you're weird. lol), brownies or cookies. Or leftover from your dinner the night before. Make sure it's not going to spoil.

Ingredients:
[Koromo (batter)]
Using cold water (about 40F) is a must. This keeps the batter from becoming sticky. When you add the flour, whisk quickly just to mix it in evenly. Sticky batter results in oily tempura.

    * 1 egg, beaten
    * 1 cup COLD water
    * 2 tablespoons dry white wine
    * 1 cup flour

The containers usually designed with separated chambers, the lid can be closed tightly and the bento food usually not the kind of soupy/watery food so it won't slosh/ mess around easily. Or if you want to carry soup anyway, you can put it in a separated container with the secure cap. To carry home-made bento, wrapped the box with handkerchief or just put in in a plastic bag. Bento foods from the store are using disposable container and simply carried with plastic/paper bag, just like the ordinary take out foods :)

Cost Plus World Market has them sometimes and also Pier 1 Imports. If you live in a large city with a Chinatown or Japantown, you can find them easily.

But you get more variety & better prices online:

haha yes i love bento food!! Yes, you can leave it in the fridge for a couple days- it really depends what it is. If you make anything deep fried I wouldn't leave it longer- where the pickles and stuff would probably last 1 week. Leave the dishes in the fridge in separate containers- then get the bento box out, heat, and serve! Or do like me- go to a restaurant!

I thought the same thing until I started using mine. It actually holds a decent size portion.

First off, I use brown instead of white rice, which is very filling.

Second, I load up on vegetables and only bring a skewer or two of grilled meat. Even my stews are mostly vegetable.

Third, I eat with the chopsticks that came with my bento box. You get full a lot faster if you eat slowly.
