I had a saba bento last night with broiled mackeral, potatoe salad, rice, takuwan, some kind of chicken and stewed vegetables. Inside the stewed veggies compartment was stewed chunks of daikon, carrot and taro. There was also a ball of something resembling a fish ball. I thought that’d what it was until I bit into it. It was really soft, and tasted something like yam/taro/potato all mushed up and formed into a small ball the size of fish balls. It wasn’t very salty, sweet, sour, bitter or flavourful. I’d like to know what this particular item is called. By the way it was a light beigey-grey color, it looked just like a fish ball.

I believe they are three of four round stackable containers that have the clip like closures to keep them together. You put different foods in each and then clip them all together and it’s a great and I think very unique lunch box. On Martha Stewarts site she just mentions that a friend found it in New York, somewhere in Chinatown. I have wanted one of these forever, I saw it years ago and then recently again on her site. All the Bento boxes I see online look like they would spill and get messy when you actually take them anywhere, unless you hold them upright inyour hand which is not very convenient when travelling on the subway or train! I’ve found very few websites selling bento boxes that hadn’t been Americanized. I want authentic bentos from Japan, even if they are imported and sold in America, just not tupperware.

I’ve already bought one from eBay and searching there again I keep pulling up the same results. To think that there are only about 25 different designs in the whole country is a little silly so I know there must be other places to buy them.

Any links to websites or possibly even just store names (near Ohio) would be great.
